The most easterly of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote reaches out towards the African coast offering glorious beaches and all-year sunshine. This island has an amazing, other-worldly landscape - the result of huge volcanic eruptions 300 years ago. The views are like something from Dr Who. There’s so much variety here. It’s easy to find a perfect, white sand beach all to yourself. Or you can enjoy Lanzarote’s tasteful south coast resorts with their wide, golden sands, great restaurants and bars and brilliant shopping. No wonder Lanzarote is many people’s favourite island.
Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote’s most popular holiday location. A long ribbon of golden sand runs the length of this lively resort which is home to bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
Laid-back and peaceful, Playa Banca is the perfect family resort. There are two beaches close to town but the best are a short drive away just around the eastern headlands where the warm water laps the rocky coves. Bliss.
Arrecife is Lanzarote’s capital and commercial centre. It has a lovely beach and retains plenty of old world charm with palm-lined promenades and beautiful architecture. The imposing Castillo de San Jose is now a modern art museum. Teguine is Lanzarote’s old capital with narrow streets and beautifully restored palaces. Costa Teguine is a new resort and wonderfully peaceful – a popular choice for single people, families with young children and mature holidaymakers. Relaxation is easy here.

For fabulous shopping, head for the Marina Rubicon near Playa Blanca. This super stylish new venue is the place to be seen with its designer yachts and gorgeous bars and restaurants. The shopping is too good to resist with fashions and gifts galore. There’s also a regular street market selling clothing, accessories and crafts. Teguine market is an even bigger affair – it’s as if the whole island turns out to this buzzing Sunday market packed with craft, food and clothing stalls. Join the crowds and browse and barter to your hearts content.
Feeling peckish? Lanzarote will tempt your taste buds with traditional Spanish recipes flavoured with African and Latin American influences. The fish and shellfish are wonderful and Lanzarote wines are delicious. You’ll find the best of the local restaurants in Arrecife and Lanzarote’s inland towns and villages. The tourist hot-spots add more great places to eat from cheap and cheerful tapas bars to international fine dining restaurants. Forget the diet for a while.
Lanzarote pleases everyone including party lovers. Puerto del Carmen has a lively club scene with nightclubs and live music in abundance. Costa Teguine provides relaxed nightlife with bars, Irish pubs and plenty of places to eat. Playa Blanca’s Marina Rubicon serves up sophisticated cocktails to the after-dinner set. Very smart.
If you can tear yourself away from that beautiful beach, you must see Lanzarote’s spectacular Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. This jaw-dropping landscape features lava cinders and 300 brooding red-black volcano cones. Board the bus – sit on the right for the best view – and see it all on an unforgettable tour. Or travel by camel and take in the views (and the bumps). For water-based fun, whisk the kids to the whale and dolphin museum in Yaiza or the exhilarating Aqua Park in Costa Teguise.
