Marmaris has grown from a tiny fishing village into one of the biggest tourist resorts in Turkey, however the town centre is still quite small, and in the old quarter behind the marina you can stroll around amid all the delightful hustle and bustle of bazaars and street life. Marmaris can compete with many European cities in stock of designer label goods which come in both original and fake. The market of Marmaris is highly developed. It would be difficult to find a town in Europe, the size of Marmaris with such a large number of shops, clustering along the streets. You can find excellent leather and suede goods, copper and brassware, jewellery, and objects carved of onyx. Turkish carpets, textiles and embroidery make good handcrafted souvenirs, and the locally produced pine scented honey called "cam bali" is superb.
Marmaris has a wide range of restaurants that cater to all budgets and tastes. There are local restaurants serving authentic Turkish food and restaurants serving German, Indian, English and Chinese cuisines. Local restaurants called ‘lokantas' are found everywhere. There is also fine dining in places like the Netsel shopping mall.
Marmaris offers a lively nightlife, with something available for everyone. The most popular place for partying in Marmaris is the Bar Street, where you can find more than 100 bars and nightclubs, making the area very lively during the night. Another famous party place in Marmaris, the beach front offers several lively bars with sun set views and live music. Also discos are easy to find in Marmaris.
Marmaris offers activities such as horse-riding along with boat and yacht charters. There is loads of water sports, including banana-boat rides, jet-skiing, para-gliding, windsurfing, water-skiing and diving. Also take a visit to the Turkish baths.
